DIY Personalized Glitter Wine Glass

Whenever possible, I’ve always preferred to make things myself; it is funner than just buying it, and it makes the item more personal and has some of my own “blood, sweat and tears” in it. Though I rarely bleed or cry while making something. A few weeks ago I made these personalized etched glitter wine glasses for my friend’s bachelorette party. Each wine glass had the guest’s first name initial and had a gold glitter stem. These were fun to make, and were a great addition to the bachelorette gift bag. Here’s how I did made these DIY personalized glitter wine glasses:

Supplies:

Directions

I started by using my Cricut Explore Air machine to cut the stencils of the letters I needed out of the vinyl. The vinyl clings to the glass, but it takes some maneuvering to make sure the vinyl is completely flat and there are no creases around the letter. This part was a little frustrating because some letters were more difficult than others. You have to make sure there are no creases or air bubbles around the letter, otherwise the etching cream could seep through and your letter will not be perfect. Once I was happy with the vinyl, I put some painter’s tape around the edges of the stencil just in case the cream got outside of the stencil.

Put your gloves and googles on (the cream can burn your skin). After the stencil and tape are in place, apply the etching cream with a paint brush. There will be little crystals in the cream, just try to brush those to the outside of the letter. The bottle says to leave the cream on for less than a few minutes. I left it on for about 10 minutes for each glass and that seemed to work well. Don’t forget to move around the cream every few minutes, that way there’s no air bubbles and the cream can evenly cover the glass. After 10 minutes, or however long you leave the cream on, rinse the cream off the glass and dry it. Your glass is now permanently etched!

Next comes the glitter! Using the sponge brush, I covered the stem with Mod Podge and then poured the glitter over it. If you hold the glass up to the light, you can see if there’s any spots that need more glitter. Just add more Mod Podge and glitter until satisfied. I didn’t do it, but you could tape off right above the stem with painter’s tape to make a cleaner line. You’ll need it taped off for the next step anyways, so might as well.

After the glitter has dried, take the glasses outdoors and put on your mask (this spray has a strong odor). In addition to the tape at the top of the stem, I used paper towels to cover the top of the wine glass, but anything will work. Spray the Mod Podge acrylic sealer evenly around the glittered stem. I made the mistake of smoothing out the spray with a brush, but that just made the glitter look dull and funny. There’s no need to smooth out the sealer, just make sure you spray it evenly and try to avoid any dripping. Let that dry and then do a second coat of sealer. You can do a third coat if you don’t think two is enough, but it was for mine. Once you can grab the stem without glitter coming off on your hands, it should be fine.

Now you’re glasses are ready for wine! Remember that these should be washed by hand only, that way the glitter will last as long as possible. I’ve been using mine for a month so far with no problems 🙂 Enjoy!
